Trialing New Solutions to Reduce Human-Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka
In collaboration with the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) in Sri Lanka, we are contributing to a vital study evaluating the effectiveness of the LRS (Light Repellent System)—a novel mitigation tool designed to reduce human-elephant conflict (HEC). As a co-author on this project, we are rigorously testing the system to assess whether it truly deters elephants from entering farms and villages.
Human-elephant conflict continues to threaten both human lives and elephant conservation across both Asia and Africa. Sri Lanka has some of the highest number of HEC in the world. As competition for space intensifies, finding solutions that work is more urgent than ever. However, it is essential that mitigation methods are scientifically tested before being widely implemented. Without evidence-based approaches, we risk wasting resources—or worse—intensifying conflict. This study is an important step toward identifying practical, effective, and community-friendly tools to promote peaceful coexistence between people and elephants.
